The eruption of confinement
Due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the eruption of Piton de la Fournaise could only be virtually observed through the images captured by Alain Bertil. The eruption began on April 2, 2020, without any prior seismic activity, which is unusual. Lava spewed from a fissure at an altitude of approximately 1900 meters.
The lava flow rates reached up to 45 m³/s, with an average of 7-10 m³/s. The eruption abruptly ceased after a nocturnal intensification. It’s remarkable how nature continues its spectacular displays despite human restrictions and the grim pandemic situation
