The Eruption of the Century
from April 2, 2007 to May 1, 2007
The eruption of Piton de la Fournaise in April 2007, often referred to as the eruption of the century, remains a significant event in the volcanic history of La Réunion. The videos filmed by Alain Bertil, which were presented for the first time during the National Geology Day in 2024, offer a unique perspective on this spectacular natural phenomenon. This film details the power of nature and the terrifying beauty of the lava flows that have crossed landscapes, redrawing the map of the island, highlighting the importance of geology in our understanding of the world.
October 2019
from 25 october, 2019 to 27 october, 2019
On October 25, an impressive natural spectacle began with the volcanic eruption, preceded by warning signs in the form of seismic crises on October 21 and 25. Vigilant scientists observed an increase in seismicity and changes in the structure of the volcano, announcing the imminence of the eruption. When the lava gushed, it marked the landscape with its fiery presence, flowing towards the RN2 and raising questions about its possible encounter with the waters of the Indian Ocean. This dance of nature ended on October 27, after intense activity characterized by pressurized gas emissions. The lava, like an ephemeral sculpture, solidified a short distance from the road, without ever touching the ocean. Authorities responded quickly to ensure the safety of residents and visitors, while managing the influx of curious people attracted by the power and beauty of the eruption, testifying to the indomitable strength of our planet.
The eruption of confinement
From april 2, 2020, to april 6, 2020
Due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the eruption of Piton de la Fournaise could only be virtually observed through the images captured by Alain Bertil. The eruption began on April 2, 2020, without any prior seismic activity, which is unusual. Lava spewed from a fissure at an altitude of approximately 1900 meters.
The lava flow rates reached up to 45 m³/s, with an average of 7-10 m³/s. The eruption abruptly ceased after a nocturnal intensification. It’s remarkable how nature continues its spectacular displays despite human restrictions and the grim pandemic situation
July 2023
from July 2, 2023 to August 10, 2023
On July 2, 2023, the Piton de la Fournaise erupted. From 8:30 a.m., the volcano demonstrated its power on its eastern flank, precisely at the Grandes Pentes.
Despite moderate eruptive flows on the surface, underground activity did not weaken, testifying to the complexity of volcanic processes. The lava, in its inexorable advance, approached 2 km from the RN2, reaching an altitude of 1800 meters. This phenomenon persisted until July 5 without notable variation.
The eruption finally concluded on August 10, after a characteristic gas piston phase, ending this natural spectacle that captivated residents and observers.
