On July 2, 2023, the Piton de la Fournaise erupted. From 8:30 a.m., the volcano demonstrated its power on its eastern flank, precisely at the Grandes Pentes.

Despite moderate eruptive flows on the surface, underground activity did not weaken, testifying to the complexity of volcanic processes. The lava, in its inexorable advance, approached 2 km from the RN2, reaching an altitude of 1800 meters. This phenomenon persisted until July 5 without notable variation.

The eruption finally concluded on August 10, after a characteristic gas piston phase, ending this natural spectacle that captivated residents and observers.
